Meaux is a city located on the Marne River, about 40 km east-northeast of Paris. While it might not be on your travel list otherwise, it’s a great destination for cyclists. One of its highlights is the interesting Meaux Cathedral, a centuries-old structure that began construction in the 12th century but faced numerous delays, leaving only one of its towers completed.

This route is a great option for a longer ride with minimal climbing. It begins by following the Canal de l'Ourcq out of Paris, offering 25 km of bike paths that let you avoid busy city roads. The first stretch can be crowded if you leave too late in the morning, but an early start ensures a smooth ride. After about 30 km, the route leaves the canal and winds through the surrounding farmland before reaching Meaux, where you descend to the Marne River.
As you arrive in Meaux, the route takes you past the cathedral, giving you the perfect opportunity for a quick visit if you want. It’s also a great chance to refill your water bottles and grab a snack at a local boulangerie.
The return journey mostly follows the Marne back toward Paris. The combination of bike lanes and dedicated cycling paths makes for an enjoyable ride. As you near the city, you’ll pass through the Bois de Vincennes before finishing up at a well-earned café stop at Le Peloton Cafe.
